MUMBAI, JAN 8: IES English regained the Giles Shield Championships, after a gap of five years when they beat Balmohan Vidyamandir by 137 runs on the third day of the four-day final at the Parsee Gymkhana here on Thursday.

Balmohan, who were chasing a target of 396 for a win in 75 overs were bowled out for 259 in 64.4 overs. The highlight of Balmohan’s innings was the century by captain Harshad Rawle (112: 17×4, 108 balls). He had the rare honour of scoring century in both the innings. He was involved in a 122-run partnership for the third wicket with Sanket Bhaye (57: 7×4, 102b).

In the morning, IES English resumed at 199 for six and added another 50 runs. Vishal Tivrekar, who was batting on 76, went on to complete his century (108: 17×4, 168b).

Rawle, who bowls off-spin, finished with 6 for 77 to complete a truly remarkable individual performance.

Varun, UBI in final

Debutants Varun Shipping entered the B Division final of the Times Shield Cricket tournament defeating Dena Bank by 166 runs on the final day at the Dadar Parsee Colony ground, Matunga here today.

In the other semi-final at Karnatak ground, Cross Maidan, Union Bank (UBI) beat Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) by virtue of the first innings lead over Mumbai Port Trust.

Dena Bank, needing to score 371 in maximum 90 overs, were bowled out for 204 with left-arm-spinner Digvijay Singh scalping six wickets for 68 runs.MPT, overnight 114 for six, were bowled out for 225.
