CHANDIGARH, June 12: It was hard work and determination which helped the 90 per cent-plus scorers among city students who appeared in the Class X ICSE examination, the results of which were declared here yesterday.While they have done their parents and teachers proud, they have big plans and want to do still better in future exams.Manpreet Sandhu of Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar has topped the Class X ICSE examination in the schools of Chandigarh, SAS Nagar and Panchkula by securing 94.3 per cent marks. A hard working and intelligent girl, she will be opting for the medical stream.The second position has been bagged by Gyan Anjan Kaur of YPS who secured 93.6 per cent ( 562/600). She attributes her high score to her attentivenes in class and not buckling under pressure. ``Strive hard to be a good all-rounder,'' she says. But since the syllabus is vast, one must do planned studies over a period of time and not depend on last minute cramming.Dilraj Singh Grewal of St Kabir Public School, Sector 26 who is third in the aggregate with 93 per cent ( 558/600) is the topper among the city schools. Overjoyed with his result, he attributed it to self study and constant motivation from parents and teachers. Aspiring to be an opthamologist, he believes that one should be systematic and regular to achieve one's goals. ``Study thoroughly and build up your tempo gradually. Don't develop an exam phobia,'' he asserts.Next in the merit list is Amitesh Rattan of St Kabir with 92.6 per cent (556 /600) who attributed his success to his dedicated teachers and hard work. ``Study throughout the year with utmost concentration to achieve the desired result. Though a month before the examination one has to become a recluse, yet one must keep a balance between sports and studies, `'he says.Karan Gupta of St Stephen's, Sector 45 has topped his school with 92.3 per cent (554/600). Dedicated effort and moral support of teachers helped me accomplish this.`` Do not cram, study with full concentration,'' says Karan. Though he used to study 6 to 7 hours daily, but he did find time to watch Cartoon Network and Discovery Channel to get the required relief.Sunjit Grover of St Kabir has secured 91.6 per cent ( 550/600) and is happy with his performance. He says:``What ultimately matters is how you study and not how many hours you put in. The final outcome depends on your concentration level.'' He plans to do his B. Tech in Computer Engineering and believes in setting definite targets and achieving them.Niharika Gossain of St Xavier's Higher Secondary School, Sector 44 has topped her school with 91.6 per cent marks. A topper all through, she attributes her good result to her hard work and proper planning. Though an assiduous student, she has been finding time to take part in the extra-curicular activities of the school.Amit Sharma of St Joseph's High School, Sector 9 who has topped his school with 91.5 per cent (549/600) did not believe his result as he was not expecting such a high percentage. ``Regular and consistent studies, parent's blessings and guidance from teachers went a long way in my good performance. One should study daily in such a way as if you have an exam the next day. Do not take ICSE lightly, it is tougher than CBSE in subjects like Science,''he advises.Vandita Goyal of the same school with 91.2 per cent ( 547/600) regrets her missing the top position by just two marks. Parents's support and regular 6 to 8 hours studies after school, during the last 3 to 4 months, are responsible for this score.`` Work hard and focus more on clarity of concepts than cramming,'' she says. She plans to do her Engineering and MBA before appearing for civil services.Raghavendra of St Xavier's with a score of 91.1 per cent he owes his success to the able guidance of his teachers. ``No need to join coaching classes. Just be regular and be attentive in class,'' he say. With a wide range of interests, he will either pursue the medical or engineering line and try to achieve excellence in whatever he does.Among others who have secured 90 per cent and more marks are Akhilesh Bansal of Saint Kabir, Bhumika and Manpreet Kaur of St Xavier's (90.6 p.c); Harjot Kaur of YPS (90.4 p.c.; Avnish Gossain of St Xavier's (90.1 p.c); Vikramjeet Singh of St Kabir and M. Priya of St Xavier's ( 90 p.c.).
