Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today emphasised the importance of technical intelligence in countering threats during his annual, but unpublicised, visit to the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He revealed that the government is considering the proposal to have a security allowance for intelligence personnel. With the inquiry into the Rabinder Singh expose still underway, the PM sought to focus more on the future than on issues which have brought the agency under the scanner in the recent past.Acknowledging the difficult circumstances in which they work, he is believed to have highlighted the government’s plan to give a 10-15 per cent security allowance for RAW and IB personnel. It’s learnt that the PM assured the gathering that the matter was being given final consideration by the government. This is also seen as an incentive for more people to join the agencies as there is a growing concern over the apparent lack of interest among government officials to join the agencies these days. The PM also distributed awards among RAW personnel for exemplary work and spent nearly three hours in the agency compex today.
