Those magnificent men in their flying machines are all set to participate in India’s first-ever air race to commemorate hundred years of flying.
Envisaged by the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Indian Air Force (IAF), it has already roped in 55 enthusiasts with a little help from the IAF and is gearing up for a three-day show from November 20 to November 22 that will ultimately converge at Nagpur.
Aircrafts will take off simultaneously from Chandigarh, Barrackpore, Bangalore and Goa and fly towards Nagpur logging up eight to 12 hours a day in a bid to complete the race.
While aircrafts in various categories — from microlights to jet Kirans, helicopters — will participate, certain handicaps will be introduced to bring the various aircraft on par with the others.
Considered a first in Indian aviation history, the race will test the pilot’s flying as well as navigational skills.
The race will also pose a challenge to the technicians who will have to maintain the aircraft during its long hauls over huge distances.
With the price of aviation fuel sky rocketing, the Civil Aviation and Petroleum ministries are planning to make it available for free to the participants. The race will culminate in Nagpur where Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is expected to flag in the participants.
