I told Parthiv to wear helmet against Kumble: Karim

A victim of an Anil Kumble snorter way back in the Asia Cup in 2000, Saba Karim had asked Parthiv Patel to wear a helmet against the spinner, an advice he ignored and paid for it with a bloodied nose.

“I saw how Parthiv was hit on his nose (during the third and final Test against Sri Lanka). It was surprising to see him without a helmet… maybe he was confident. But Parthiv was fortunate to have hit on the nose,” Saba told PTI.

“The ball came off the pad and him hard. But my injury was very serious. I’m glad that Parthiv could come and keep again. He needs to put on some ice and he would be fine,” he added.

During a camp of the Emerging players in Bangalore before they set for Australia in May this year, Saba had spent two days with the young Indian cricketers at the camp in Bangalore.

Picked as the skipper of Indian side for the Emerging Players’ Tournament in Australia, Parthiv, too, was present at the camp.

Sharing the nasty memory of the Asia Cup match against Bangladesh when he was struck on the right eye by a rising Kumble delivery came off the batsman’s boot, Karim had insisted Parthiv to wear helmet, irrespective of the nature of bowlers.

“In modern day’s cricket, a helmet is a must…I had told him (Parthiv) during the camp. In fact, I had quoted my example how the injury to my right eye ended my career,” Karim told PTI.
