The Income Tax Department has asked the pro-Pakistan leader and chairman of breakaway Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani to cough up Rs 3 crore as penalty for not disclosing the assets found at his residence during the search operation in 2001 in his tax returns.The I-T notice was served to him recently after the taxmen calculated that Geelani had not disclosed assets to the tune of Rs 5 crore, sources said. As per the I-T law, a person has to pay 60 per cent of his or her undisclosed wealth as penalty. Sources said Geelani had approached the I-T tribunal challenging the decision.Barring his daughter Anisa and son-in-law Iftikhar Geelani, all other members of the Geelani family were separately served with a notice to deposit the penalty amount for their undisclosed wealth.Geelani’s other son-in-law Altaf Ahmed has been directed to pay Rs 32 lakh as penalty towards his unaccounted wealth, they said.Fire-brand Jamaat leader’s another son Naseem Geelani has been asked to pay Rs 31,000 while his daughter-in-law Rehana Rs 22,000.The I-T Department had raided Geelani’s residence and places of his kin on June 9, 2001. Geelani had shown an annual income of Rs 17,100. But he also maintained 14 servants at his house who were paid Rs 2,000 each, the I-T Department claimed. — (PTI)
