West Bengal Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty got another helpful nudge from veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu on Friday when the latter said that though he should not have publicly endorsed Chakraborty for a post in the state secretariat, he would still like to raise the issue within the party.

On Tuesday, Basu had commented that Chakraborty, a veteran leader, should get a berth in the state secretariat and or at least in the Central Committee.

On Friday, while entering the weekly meeting of the CPI(M) state secretariat at the party’s Alimuddin Street headquarters here, Basu admitted that he should not have commented on inner party issues in public. “I should not have spoken in public about internal matters,” Basu said. “But it is true that I shall raise the issue within the party.”

Chakraborty, who is in his sixties, often embarrasses the party and its leaders by speaking out his mind. Although he can mobilise huge rallies and is a troubleshooter for the Left Front Government and the party, he has never been given a senior organisational post. Basu has been trying to make amends.
