CHANDIGARH, Nov 29: Last year’s runners-ups Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) went one better this time, winning the All-India Inter-Electricity Boards badminton championship here today. They crushed Maharashtra State Electricity Board 3-0 in the final.
Virender gave HVPN a winning start, beating MSEB’s Pankaj Pathak in straight games. Surender made it 2-0, subduing Santosh More 15-5, 15-0. HVPN made sure of the title, clinching the doubles as well, with the Virender-Surender duo beating the rival pair of Pankaj-Santosh.
Earlier, HVPN had drubbed Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board 3-0 and MSEB had prevailed 3-2 over UPSEB in the two semifinals.
Punjab State Electricity Board, who had made it to the semifinal, were disqualified as they were playing with `contract employees’.

PGI win
Thanks to Raman Sharma’s fine allround performance, PGI Club beat the Chandigarh Press Club by 59 runs in an exhibition match at the Police Lines ground, Sector 26 today.
Raman was declared the man of the match, Ajay Banerjee best batsman and N K Jha was the best bowler.
