AHMEDABAD, DEC 29: The premiere of noted artist M F Hussain’s Gaj Gamini has been postponed after City Pulse, a multiplex near here, was attacked by 15 to 20 unidentified persons who smeared black paint on hoardings of the film on Wednesday evening.

While it was suspected that the hoardings were vandalised by activists of the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, both the organisations have denied having anything to do with the attack.

The attack occurred a few hours after Hussain visited the multiplex to give final touches to a set and hoardings which recreated the Dalmandi ki Gali’ sequence, a part of the film in which actress Madhuri Dixit plays a blind singer, and leaves for Mumbai

Gandhinagar police said, the unidentified miscreants arrived late in the evening on motorcycles and tried to force their way into the multiplex but were stopped by four private security guards of the city pulse who also closed the shutters of the theatre to prevent them from going inside.

However, the miscreants vandalised a couple of hoardings kept outside with paintings of the film. One security guard Mohammed Safi Sheikh was injured when he was hit on the head with sticks by the miscreants.

A formal police complaint was lodged by the multiplex manager L D Purohit who said the organisers have postponed the event for the time being because Hussain refused to return to the city for the premiere after the incident.

Hussain being targetted in Ahmedabad is not a new thing. Two years ago, Bajrang Dal activists vandalised the Hussain-Doshi-ni-gufa while objecting to nude pictures of Hindu goddesses painted by Hussain.

After the attack the gufa was renamed as Ahmedabad Ni Gufa.
