Investigators on the Ayodhya terror trail are now looking into the possibility of two dormant or sleeper fidayeen modules holed up in Uttar Pradesh.

Sources in the STF said these groups, suspected to be ‘‘extensions of the group’’ that stormed the disputed temple complex, were to act as ‘‘back-up’’ to ‘‘complement the Ayodhya attack elsewhere later, in the likely chances of them not making it’’.

These fidayeens, they say, could be in their mid-thirties, with an easy-to-mingle-in-the-crowd appearance. Officials believe they are somewhere in western UP. An Intelligence source said central agencies had shared their inputs on this matter with the UP police.

Interrogation of two ISI agents arrested in Noida last week has also thrown up evidence of a ‘‘large and well-oiled logistical support here’’. The attackers of the disputed site are also known to have used western UP as a transit corridor.

The UP police have sounded an alert in Saharanpur, Meerut, Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad and Noida. Specifics of the likely targets —religious congregations and festival gatherings — have also been passed on by the state home department. Wireless intercepts and cellphone conversations indicate that the militants would ‘‘try and strike again’’ especially during the festival month of Saawan.

SSP Ghaziabad J.N. Singh said on Monday that the district has been put under high vigil. He added that trains like the Jalandhar-Delhi Superfast Express, Shalimar and Frontier Express were under specific watch after intelligence tip-off on serious threats.
