AHMEDABAD, MARCH 20: SSC students report poor quality of Gujarati paper

Around 30 cases of copying were reported from different parts of the State on the first day of the SSC and HSC examinations even as some tough questions asked in the Accounts (HSC general stream) and Gujarati language (SSC) question papers had many students nervous.

While three cases of copying were reported during the biology examination from Satsangi High School in Bapunagar area here by a special squad of the Ahmedabad Collectorate, eight other cases of copying were reported during the SSC examination from Porbandar district, said the control-room of Gujarat Secondary Education Board. Four copying cases were reported from Jamnagar and two from Bhavnagar districts, during the SSC exam, the control-room said.

Besides, eight copying cases were reported from Amreli and one from Patan, during the HSC (science stream) examination. Also, two copying cases from Godhra in Panchmahals district, and one each from Surendranagar and Rajkot districts, were reported during the SSC examination, the control-room said.

The SSC examination of language papers began on a quiet note. Students reached examination centres, accompanied by parents and relatives. However, those who took the Gujarati language paper later complained that the essays were tough and the report-writing subject rather irrelevant.

The essays – If I were asked to Head India and Challenges facing India in the 21st Century – offered little option to the students, they found the report-writing subject, ‘Safai Campaign Held by Your School on Gandhi Jayanti’ utterly relevant. "Which school organises Safai campaigns these days," asked a disturbed student after writing the examination.

The accounts question paper of HSC (General Stream) gave jitters to many, though the Biology paper (HSC Science) was easy. Said a student of HSC (general stream), "The accounts paper was tougher compared the previous years. The questions were asked in a clever fashion."

For instance, a sum on Desi Nama Systems was asked without option this time, unlike previous years, when the sum was asked in option to Desi Nama Final Account, the student said.

Besides, in another question students were asked to prepare a Khata Vahi. "Most teachers do not teach Khata Vahi at all," revealed the student.

These two questions alone accounted for 36 marks, leaving many students flustered.

At National High school, Sola Road, the flying squad members took objection when they found the school principal, whose son was taking examination in the same school, in the premises. The principal left after the squad members asked him to do so, said GSEB sources.

In an unusual gesture, students who went to Sadhna High school in Pritamnagar area here, were welcomed with roses and best wishes cards by the school management. At Navrang High school, too, SSC students were given roses as they entered the premises.

At Ganesh Vidyalaya, Nav Wadaj, there was just one student in the entire building. That, too, a repeater. Surprisingly, staff, including a supervisor, the local squad and a peon, were on duty to take care of the lone soul.
