GANDHINAGAR, Sept 26: The three-day monsoon session of the State Assembly commencing from Monday is expected to witness fireworks with the main Opposition party having chalked out a strategy to corner the ruling BJP mainly on two major issues 8212; the deteriorating law and order situation and the Government8217;s 8220;inept8221; handling of the acute water crisis in some parts of the State.
The Congress Legislature Party CLP meeting held at CLP leader Amarsinh Chaudhary8217;s residence here on Sunday dwelt at length on the alleged failures of the Keshubhai Patel Government on various fronts and worked out a strategy to push the Government to the wall on these issues during the Assembly session.
On Monday, the House will be adjourned after paying tributes to the Kargil martyrs. The next day, two official Bills, one relating to Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board and the Electricity Sales-tax Amendment Bill, will be presented in the House. The Congress will press for a debate on the law and order situation and also on the acute water crisis facing parts of the State, mainly Saurashtra and Kutch.
The Congress appears armed with enough ammunition to fire at the ruling BJP during Assembly proceedings. 8220;There is total breakdown of the law and order machinery and the BJP Government has lost control over the State administration, leaving the common man to fend for himself,8221; Leader of the Opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary said as he emerged from the CLP meeting on Sunday evening.
Chaudhary charged that crimes of a serious nature were on the rise, with about 140 murders, including seven political murders, taking place in different parts of the State since the BJP assumed power about 18 months ago. 8220;The Government has failed to protect even its party legislators and workers who have been brutally done to death by criminals,8221; he said.
The Opposition leader alleged that bickerings within the ruling BJP and certain Sangh Parivar leaders locking horns with the Government had made life miserable for the common man. 8220;Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana participating in a dharna, along with senior State Ministers Narottam Patel and Hemant Chapatwala, to protest against the police firing during Friday8217;s Ganeshotsav procession speaks volumes of the Government8217;s total failure on the law and order front,8221; he said. 8220;It is ironical that the ruling party leaders are forced to play the Opposition role, which is unprecedented in the political history of Gujarat,8221; the Opposition leader charged.
The recent communal disturbances in Ahmedabad and Idar in the wake of the Rathyatra, the political murders in Morbi, Kutch and Surat and the brutal killing of seven people in the police firing on the Ganesha procession in Surat will provide the Opposition with a stick to beat the Government during the Assembly proceedings. 8220;We will highlight all this in the House,8221; the Opposition leader said.
