NAGPUR, DEC 5: A non-official Bill on formation of a separate Vidarbha state, initiated by the Lok Sabha member from Nagpur Vilas Muttemwar, was introduced in Parliament on Friday for discussion and consideration. The non-official Bill assumes special significance in the background of Vajpayee government's decision for creation of smaller states of Uttarakhand, Vananchal and Chhattisgarh. While initiating the private Bill, the Congress Lok Sabha member contended that chances of creating a separate Vidarbha state was much stronger than other claimants and the proposal was unanimously recommended by the State Reorganisation Commission (SRC), headed by Fazal Ali, some four decades ago.The experiment of merger of Vidarbha with Maharashtra miserably failed as the region continues to remain backward and neglected in spite of being endowed with rich natural resources, fertile soil and water potential. There is a popular public upsurge - particularly among younger generation that in spite of periodicalannouncement of mega projects, nothing tangible has really taken place on the development front in Vidarbha region.Earlier, the former Lok Sabha member from Nagpur, Banwarilal Purohit, had moved a private Bill on formation of separate Vidarbha in the Parliament. However, the Bill could not come up for discussion as Parliament was dissolved. It may be recalled here that the President K R Narayanan, had accorded permission to table the private Bill a few months back. The discussion on the issue is likely to take place during the current winter session.Barring Shiv Sena, almost all political parties have supported for formation of a separate Vidarbha state. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party even incorporated the issue in its election manifesto during the last Lok Sabha elections. However, the BJP later did not follow up the issue, along with the Vananchal, Uttarakhand and Chhattishgarh states when it came in power.
