March 22: The Western India Hotel and Restaurant Association has expressed confidence that the state government will introduce a fair, just and reasonable’ legislation for an amended Rent Control Act.

Association vice-president Sunder N Awatramani said a delegation of hoteliers and restaurant owners has been informally sounded by the state government about a new act that will entail a modest doubling or tripling of existing rents. The existing Rent Control Act, due to lapse on March 31, protects both commercial and residential tenants, but a modest rental hike such as two to three times would be acceptable, he added.
