LONDON, July 23: Matthew HORNE cracked a century at Lord’s today as New Zealand took a firm grip on the second Test against England. Chasing a first innings total of 186, the Kiwis, who have never won a Lord’s Test, reached 242 for six at the close of play on the second day, restricted only by a late England burst of three wickets in the last half-hour.
New Zealand lead by 56 after England managed just 186 in their first innings, their lowest total against the Kiwis at Lord’s. Horne, who scored exactly 100, enjoyed a 120-run fourth wicket stand with Roger Twose, who scored 52, as the tourists made the most of excellent batting conditions under sunny skies.
England had resumed their sorry first innings showing on 183 for nine and lasted just six minutes as captain Nasser Hussain feathered a legside catch to New Zealand wicket-keeper Adam Parore with just three runs added.
The wicket gave Chris Cairns figures of six for 77, while Hussain’s only consolation was that he top-scored for England with 61.
NewZealand were 75 for two at lunch and Alan Mullally took the only wicket of the afternoon session when he removed the dangerous Nathan Astle for 43. Mullally banged in the delivery on leg stump and Astle gloved it to Read behind the wicket. Astle had struck nine fours in his 61-ball innings.
But Horne continued to be the cornerstone of the New Zealand effort despite being hit on the elbow. He reached his 50 in 116 balls with seven fours. The Kiwi, still in discomfort from the injury, had an escape on 56 when Phil Tufnell could not hold on to a chance at fine leg off the luckless Caddick.
Horne made the most of his fortune and New Zealand reached tea at 163 for three. They surpased England’s tally soon after and Horne brought up his third Test hundred in 330 minutes off 203 balls, hitting 13 fours.
Twose then brought up his half-century before skying the next ball off Headley to Caddick.
