MUMBAI, July 29: Colaba Young Stars (CYS) dominated the match, Holiday Inn won it 2-0. What stood between CYS and victory in the Western India Football Association-conducted Gulf Oil Senior Division League match was Holiday Inn’s last line of defence — goalkeeper Malay Sarkar.

Sarkar made three brilliant saves of which at least two should have been goals for CYS. Then two goals through defensive errors from CYS gave the match on a platter to the hoteliers.

A horrendous mistake by CYS right-back Ravi Ghadi led to the first goal. He failed to hook away a loose ball and substitute Ronald Misquitta punished the blunder by quickly latching on to the ball, driving forward and flicking it over the goalkeeper, Pramod Brid.

The second CYS error came in the 82nd minute when Paolo D’Costa’s innocuous shot from 30-yards out slipped between Brid’s fingers to lodge itself in the net.

But for these errors it had been a CYS show at the Cooperage. With the underfoot conditions heavy, impairing the quick movements of players, the game was presumably dreary and slow.

But it picked up steam once CYS fired their first salvo with Filip D’Costa in the thick of action. Dijendro Singh from the near the half-line on the right gave a good ball forward to Filip who failed to control it. Then from the left Vikas Jadhav pushed a forward pass to Filip who was thwarted by a reflex save from Sarkar.

At the other end, Pramod Brid was also matched Sarkar save for save by bringing off a brilliant block off a shot from PK Shaji. Shaji’s shoulder-high shot was on target but Brid had advanced, reducing the angle and yet needed to fling himself to the left.

Off the counter move, CYS had the best chance to score when Ravi Ghadi collected a defensive ball, bolted down the left, beat a defender only to be thwarted by Sarkar.

After a hectic first half, the action was comparatively subdued though it was the decisive half of the match. Hostilities resumed with CYS’s Mohd Rafique, who came in for Vikas Jadhav, getting two opportunities. First he shot over after Dijendro Singh put him through then from 30 yards out, he shot but Sarkar saved it.

Then came Ghadi’s mistake. Coupled with his miss earlier in the game, it turned out to be a terrible day for him. Five minutes later, CYS conceded their second goal through another error.

CYS pushed forward but were unable to beat Sarkar who brought off another save when the custodian foiled Jeet Kujur’s curling left-footer in brilliant fashion flinging himself backwards to effect a superlative save.

Both the teams have finished their first-phase encounters of eight matches each. Holiday Inn have won three, drew three and lost two while CYS have won two, drawn three and lost three.

Earlier, in a First Division match, BPT trounced Dena Bank 6-3. Nasir Ahmed scored a hat-trick for the winners, netting the second, third, and fourth goals. Rizwan opened the scoring while Ajaz Ansari and Joseph made up for the other two goals.

Steves D’Souza scored two goals for the losers while Ray Finch netted the third.

Suresh Jadhav ‘tricks

Antonio D’Silva (Dadar) drubbed St.Joseph (Wadala) 3-0, in the under-14 III-D group at the St.Xavier’s ground, Parel. Suresh Jadhav starred in this victory with a hat-trick.
