England’s pace-spin duo of Matthew Hoggard and Monty Panesar destroyed Sri Lanka for 188 on the opening day of the first Test here today. England replied with 49/1 by stumps, losing opener Alastair Cook leg-before to Chaminda Vaas. Kumara Sangakkara made 92 for the hosts and Prasanna Jayawardene chipped in with 51 to rescue the team tottering at 42-5 after electing to bat.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 1st innings: 188 (K Sangakkara 92, P Jayawardene 51; Hoggard 4/29, Panesar 3/46) vs England 1st innings: 49/1 (M Vaughan 13 batting).
