SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 17: The chief commander (operations) of the Hizbul Mujahideen, Abdul Majid Dar, who had announced a cease-fire with India in July, has been recalled to Pakistan. Sources said the decision to recall Dar was taken by the Hizb command council in Pakistan. However, it’s not clear who will replace him.

Dar had reportedly developed serious differences with Syed Salahuddin, Hizb’s supreme commander, soon after he announced a unilateral cease-fire with the security forces in Kashmir. Dar had been criticised by the Hizb’s top leadership in Pakistan for his handling of the situation arising out of the cease-fire.

There were even reports of a split between him and Salahuddin during the brief cease-fire period. Some reports suggested that he was not authorised to declare the cease-fire and had been sent from across the border to assess the situation and take important separatist leaders into confidence about the peace move.

As a result, his deadline of three months for the cease-fire was reduced to a week by Salahuddin. Though the real cause of his return is not known, sources said recent developments, especially the reported takeover of the Hizbul Mujahideen by the Jamat-e-Islami in Pakistan, might have to do something with the order.

Pakistan’s Jamat-e-Islami had vehemently disapproved the cease-fire move by the Hizb and described it as “backtracking” from the path of jehad, they said.
