Former world number one Martina Hingis returned from a career-threatening injury to beat qualifier Magui Serna 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Canadian Open on Tuesday.

After three months out of the game the 21-year-old Swiss, seeded six, appeared totally in command as she outplayed her 23-year-old Spanish opponent in 61 minutes on the Central Court.

The $1.22 million Canadian Open serves as a warm-up for the US Open in two weeks. Hingis will also play in New Haven, Connecticut, next week, before heading to New York hoping she can break the Williams sisters domination of the women’s game.

Hingis had not played since Hamburg in early May, where she reached the semi-finals. She then underwent surgery to repair torn and damaged ligaments in her left ankle.

The last Grand Slam singles title for the winner of Wimbledon and the US Open in 1997 came in 1999 when she defeated Amelie Mauresmo in Melbourne for a third consecutive Australian championship. World number one Serena Williams will play her second round match against Colombia’s Fabiola Zuluaga latr on Tuesday. Her sister Venus has not entered the Canadian Open.

William and Hingis, as well as the rest of the top eight seeds, received first-round byes.

Agassi advances

Washington: Andre Agassi broke Noamokun of Israel’s serve twice in the first three games and never looked back as he advanced to the third round of the Legg Mason Classic with a 6-2 6-2 victory yesterday. Agassi, looking to win the tournament for the sixth time, was seldom bothered by Okun’s serve. Okun won just 42 per cent of first-serve points, and Agassi earned three service breaks in the first set and two more in the second. “When I was on his serve, I returned it very solidly,” Agassi said. “He did miss a lot of first serves, so I had opportunities to get into points.”
