NEW DELHI, DEC 27: The entire Opposition on Monday voiced its support to the Government and authorised it to take any decision in the hijacking incident keeping in mind the "safety and security of the passengers and the overall interest of the nation".In a two hour meeting held at the Prime Minister's residence, a tense and shaken looking Atal Behari Vajpayee said the Government would fix the responsibility for the hijacking incident after an inquiry is held. But the Opposition parties made it clear that they were uninterested in a post-mortem at this stage.External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, who made a 40-minute presentation of what happened between Kathmandu to Kandhar at the start of the meeting, admitted that enough had not been achieved to bring in International pressure. "But this is largely due to Christmas and Ramzan holidays," he is reported to have explained. He also gave detailed account of why quick action could not be taken at Amritsar. One of the reasons put forward by him was thatthere was no sufficient time to deploy crack commandos there. The Government was keen to explain why action could not be taken at Amritsar but surprisingly the Opposition was unwilling to be dragged into the situation - its argument being this was not the time to look into the past.
