Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati today ordered a high-level inquiry into yesterday’s stampede at the Charbagh railway station left 17 dead and 50 hurt. Mayawati asked Chief Secretary D.S. Bagga to inquire into the incident so that action could be taken against the guilty.

Meanwhile, thousands of BSP supporters, who had come from every corner of the state to attend yesterday’s rally, were still seen at railway stations and bus stops today trying to catch trains and buses.

Hundreds were seen roaming around in the city in search of relatives with whom they lost contact after the rally. Sixteen people were killed and around 50 injured in last night’s stampede as BSP workers scrambled to catch trains after the rally.

One person succumbed to his injuries this morning at the King George Medical College.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sukhdeo Rajbhar, BSP leader in Vidhan Parishad Swami Prasad Maurya and another Minister, Kailashnath Yadav, who were still camping at the railway station to arrange transportation for their party workers, said special train services have been started to clear the rush.

Maurya admitted the stampede would not have taken place had proper arrangements been made. ‘‘But we did not expect such a large gathering.’’
