Motorcycle makers enjoyed mixed fortunes in May as only the market leader Hero Honda saw a 30 per cent growth during the month. Bajaj Auto sales remained flat while TVS Motor Company saw a substantial degrowth.

Hero Honda sold 2,12,177 units in May this year, the highest-ever in a single month by any company, compared to 1,63,582 units sold in the same period of 2003.

The company continued to maintain leadership position in the motorcycle segment with market share of 52 per cent in the last six months and an average 2-wheeler market share of 40 per cent, Hero Honda said. During the last eight months, the company has sold in excess of two lakh bikes four times and had come within striking distance on three occasions. This is despite many recent launches of competitive bikes, it added.

Meanwhile, Hero Honda Motors and its Japanese joint venture partner Honda Motor Co. are expected to renew their ’’licence and assistance agreement’’ on Wednesday.

Hero Honda is owned 26 per cent each by the Munjals and Honda Motor Co., though Honda’s wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Motorcycle Scooter India makes scooters in India since 2001, and is expected to launch a motorcycle too.
