Hero Honda bike sales jump 38.6% to 8.45 lakh

MUMBAI, FEB 2 : India’s largest motorcycle maker Hero Honda Motors today reported a 24.4 per cent rise in its January sales at 90,371 units over 72,646 units sold in the same month last year.

BAL also registered a 79% in motorcycle sales for the period April 2000-January 2001 with sales of 3,47,411 units compared to 1,94,275 units sold in the same period of last year, R L Ravichandran, vice-president (marketing and business development), said in a release here today.

"Our strategy with focus on constantly creating product excitment by introducing new models with improved fuel efficiency and styling has steered BAL’s performance in the motorcycle segment, he said adding, the company’s market share has increased from 14.9% in last year to 21% in the current fiscal.

BAL has also chalked out a major expansion plan in association with KHI, to increase its production capacity to 70,000 bikes per month in the next fiscal. The overall geared scooter sales in January stood at 32,622 units, up from 16,761 units sold in December 2000.

Encouraging results of the new introduced economy series in the geared scooters segment in Punjab and Haryana markets helped arrest the decline in scooters sales, he said.

In the ungeared scooters, BAL sold 4,674 units in January 2001, a decline of 3%, as against 4,826 units sold in the same period of last year. For the month of January, the company sold 89,921 units of two and three wheelers, up from December sales of 72,504 units.
