You can get him to talk on morality in public life, falling standards of education, or the lack of patriotism in the average Indian. A man with a philosophical bent of mind, Sukhvinder Singh Puri, 61, is willing to enter a conversation on any subject, barring the one everyone wants him to talk about, Telgi scam.
Puri heads the SIT set up on the Bombay HC’s orders. The single-mindedness and speed with which his team has worked has set alarm bells ringing in political quarters. His contemporaries in the IPS cadre are not surprised. Former DGP Arvind Inamdar, who was Puri’s superior, describes him as one of the finest officers in the force. ‘‘Working with Puri was a different experience. He was perfect and left no scope for a second opinion on decisions taken by him.’’
Later, as head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Puri was instrumental in unearthing the MPSC scam, wherein exam papers were leaked. After retiring as DGP, when Puri was recalled by the HC to lead the Telgi probe, he had remarked that he was in a strange position, having been called upon to investigate his own colleagues. But, he said, he would tackle the job with a judicious mind.
