Although the mercury slightly dipped on Monday, temperatures still hovered over the normal range in most parts of north and central India. Seventy-four more people perished in the torrid conditions, pushing the death count to 148 this summer.

Sriganganagar in Rajasthan blazed at 46.3 degrees Celsius. Amritsar in Punjab was at 45.1 degree Celsius as the heat wave seared through the region.

Over 100 people have died in North and Central India since the onset of the tormenting heat spell. Uttar Pradesh accounted for 62 deaths, Punjab 16, Madhya Pradesh 12, Rajasthan nine, Delhi two and Haryana one.

Sriganganagar in Rajasthan blazed at 46.3 degrees Celsius on Monday, while Hisar and Amritsar both topped the 45-degree mark.

Met officials say beginning Tuesday, there is a strong likelihood of isolated thunderstorms in Delhi and the rest of the northwestern region of the country.

The Relief

The Northeastern states and parts of Bihar have received some rainfall. Pre-monsoon showers hit Chandigarh on Monday. Conditions are favourable for the advance of monsoon over Konkan and parts of Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand in the next couple of days.
