World champion Michael Schumacher claimed an emotional victory in the San Marino Grand Prix here today on the day his Mother Elisabeth died. The Ferrari driver declined to speak after the race, but his team principal Jean Todt praised him for keeping his composure in such difficult circumstances.
“I think today was crucial of what Michael is achieving in Formula I,” said Todt. “It was very difficult for him today and he did the job because he felt he wanted to do it. It is important that he showed himself as a racer but also that he showed what he is as a man and that was most important today.”
Schumacher produced a flawless display to win from pole position and score his fifth win at Imola, and the 65th of his career. Importantly for the team, it was the first win and first podium of the season. “We were strong. Obviously we deserved better than what we have had so far with the potential of the team, the drivers, the car, but that’s racing,” said Todt.
McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen continued his impressive start to the season as his two-stop strategy paid off with second place overall. He remains in the championship lead, 13 points ahead of team-mate David Coulthard, but he admitted he almost threw away his second place finish in the dying stages.
“It was a good race for us,” said the Finn.
“The team was great and the strategy worked well but I slowed down a little too much at the end and Barrichello got quite close.”
