The Calcutta High Court today issued a contempt notice against Left Front chairman Biman Bose for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the judiciary over a court order banning rallies and processions on weekdays and directed him to appear before the court on November 7.
A division bench comprising Justices Ashok Ganguly and S.P. Talukdar gave the direction, following a contempt petition moved by advocate Idris Ali, who alleged that Bose had made derogatory remarks against Justice Amitava Lala after he ordered a ban on rallies on September 29.
Ali alleged that the Left Front chairman also led processions in violation of Justice Lala’s order, which was a clear contempt of court.
Incidentally, the same bench had stayed Justice Lala’s order on Monday, following an appeal by the state government.
This is the second time that Bose is facing a contempt of court notice. In the mid-90s, a fine of Rs 1,000 was slapped on him after he made some derogatory comments about high court judges.
The Left Front chairman recently claimed that he had ‘‘rejected the Calcutta High Court order slapping a fine on him and ordered a refund of the fine money’’. He was not available for comments on today’s court notice. After repeated attempts to reach him, Bose’s secretary informed that he ‘‘is busy in a meeting’’.
A few days ago, the retired judges’ associations had asked the state government to put a stop to personal attacks made against Justice Lala, launched by Bose and CPI(M)-led organisations. Bose had coined the slogan, ‘‘Lala quit Bengal’’.
