NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 10: The Election Commission today directed that all voters in Haryana having photo identity cards would be required to produce them at the time of exercising their franchise in the February 22 assembly polls.

"After taking into account all relevant considerations and the legal and factual position, the Election Commission hereby directs that all electors in Haryana, who have been issued with their electoral identity cards, shall have to produce these cards to exercise their franchise," the commission said in an order today.

Those who do not have the photo identity cards would have to satisfy the presiding officers by producing some documentary evidence to prove their bona fide, the commission said.

As it was for the first time in the country that the production of cards was being insisted upon, the commission, as a matter of abundant caution, would permit the odd electors, who have not obtained cards, to exercise their franchise provided their identity was otherwise established to the satisfaction of the presiding officers.

Those who do not have cards would have to produce documents such as ration cards, driving licences, passports, identity cards issued by the Central/State governments, public sector undertakings, local bodies or other private industrial houses, property or tax documents, passbooks issued by banks and post offices, kisan pass books, electricity bills, chula tax bills or any other similar documents, the commission said.
