CHANDIGARH, June 9: The Haryana government has proposed to open seven more self-financing engineering colleges during the current academic session with a view to promote technical education in the state.

Disclosing this here today, Technical Education Minister Narain Singh said that the proposed technical institutions would be opened at Panchkula, Kaithal, Jagadhri, Jind, Faruk Nagar, Faridabad and Israna. As a result, the annual intake capacity of the technical institutions in the state would increase from 2,380 to 3,940. The Technical Education Department has already issued no objection certificate for setting up these colleges.

The Minister said that the department had also approved the proposal for starting condensed part time degree level courses for diploma holders at YMCA Institute of Engineering and Technology at Faridabad. The state government had also decided to reserve 10 per cent seats in Sir Chhotu Ram State College of Engineering, Murthal, Vaish College of Engineering, Rohtak, M. M. Engineering College, Mullana and M. L. Institute of Engineering and Technology, Radaur under lateral entry schemes for diploma holders under continuing education programme by admitting them in second year of the four years engineering degree courses, he added.

Singh said that 10 degree level and seven diploma level institutions were functioning under the self-financing scheme in the state. Under the direct central assistance scheme of Central government, community development centres had been established in 14 polytechnics with the objective of imparting job-oriented training to the unemployed rural youth for their self-employment, he said.

Besides this, appropriate low cost technologies have been identified suiting to the need of rural mass, and transfer and multiplying the same after their development, testing and field demonstration. The technical support services such as maintenance of agricultural implements, electrical equipment, domestic appliances etc. were also being extended to the rural areas. About 12,000 rural youth had been trained in different trades under this scheme, Singh pointed out.
