CHANDIGARH, SEPT 24: Bureaucrats in Haryana will now have to pay up for violation of norms regarding their vehicles, including unauthorised use of tinted glasses and red lights atop their cars.

State Chief Secretary Vishnu Bhagwan has issued directions to all senior government officials that the fines imposed by the traffic authorities and the transport department on government vehicles for such violations would be deducted from the concerned officers’ pay and allowances. Till now, the fines were being paid by the government departments.

According to the Chief Secretary’s letter to all heads of departments and deputy commissioners, the fine will neither be paid from the state exchequer nor would there be any reimbursement of it. The officers have been asked to comply with the instructions.

The move comes in the wake of an order by Justice Swatantar Kumar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court who had observed that government vehicles allotted to various officers were being used in violation of the directives issued by the court regarding right of display of films, tinted glasses and red lights.

Earlier this year, the government had brought out a list of ministers and officers, including financial commissioners, deputy commissioners, director general of state police and superintendents of police, who are entitled to use red lights, tinted glasses and films in accordance with the High Court order.
