CHANDIGARH, July 28: The Haryana Amateur Boxing Association will perhaps be the first affiliated unit of the Indian Amateur Boxing Association in the country to introduce above 10 category in the state meets. The first competitions in this new section will be held from August 10 to 14 during the Haryana State boxing mela.
Ashwani Sharma, organsing secretary of the Haryana Boxing Association, said here today that competitions would be held at Haryana Model Higher Secondary School, Sector 10 and Community Centre, Sector 7, Panchkula. All the three state meets – 14th sub-junior, 26th junior and 31st senior – would be conducted from August 10 to 14.
Ashwani disclosed that the IABA had already decided to introduce competitions in the national meets for above 10. The first national meet for boys above 10 is likely to be held in Calcutta. According to the federation rules the boxers must have attained the age of 10 (20 kg) for the sub-junior meets but he should be under-17 years on the date of championship. Boxers in the age group of 17 to 19 years are eligible to take part in the junior section and boys above 19 but below 34 years can compete in the senior section.
The organising committee of the Haryana state meets has decided not to allow those boxers who had attained positions in the high categories to particiapte in the lower categories.
Alok Mittal, president of the Panchkula District Boxing Association said that more than 350 boxers from all over the state would compete in all the three Haryana meets. He announced prizes for those boxers who achieve distinction in the state meets.
The weighing-in and medicals will be conducted at Community Centre, Sector 7, Panchkula on August 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. A medical board is being constituted to varify age of the boxers in case of disputes. The association may also invite a doctor from NIS Patiala to assist the medical board.
Accroding to Alok Mittal, the association has also invited Indian probables who are attending coaching camp in Patiala for the exhibition bouts on August 14. It will provide the Haryana boxers an opportunity to learn a few lessons from the Indian boxers.

AITA funds for juniors
The All India Tennis Association today announced its `One crore per annum’ junior development programme, envisaging grassroots level training to at least 100 children from each state every year.
A grant of Rs 1.5 lakh per annum will be disbursed to each state satisfying eligibility criteria like stipulated number of courts for training juniors, trained coaches and availability of adequate number of AITA registered players under 16 years of age, an AITA release said.
The first instalment of Rs 62,500 covering August to December this year has been disbursed to Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Pondicherrry associations, the release said.
