The Haryana Congress has served a 72-hour ultimatum to the Chautala government to approach the Supreme Court for abrogation of the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, 2004.
Addressing a press conference today, general secretary Mange Ram Gupta said if the state government fails to approach the apex court and the Centre too is unable to resolve the matter in Haryana’s favour, all Congress MLAs would submit their resignations to the Speaker on July 23 after 12 noon.
On July 17, 19 MLAs had submitted their resignations to state Congress chief Bhajan Lal after the Haryana Pradesh Committee meeting. The high command had asked the party president not to act in haste and hold back the resignations for the time being, said Gupta.
Led by Bhajan Lal, the 11-member Action Committee of the Haryana Congress had met both Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi separately in this regard.
Gupta said six Independents, who had extended support to the party recently, would also tender their resignations. They are Jai Prakash Gupta (Karnal), Bhim Sein Mehta (Indri), Rajinder Singh Bisla (Ballabgarh), Dev Raj Dewan (Sonepat), Daryao Singh Rajora (Jhajjar) and Mula Ram (Narnaul). Action had been initiate d against these MLAs after they extended support to the Congress before the Rajya Sabha elections.
Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, the state Cabinet on Tuesday too decided to challenge the provisions of the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act 2004 in the Supreme Court as it would have an adverse effect on the Thein Dam, Shah Nahar project and Anandpur Hydel Project agreements.
