NEW DELHI, July 14: Harvinder Kaur Waraich, leading comfortably after the semi-final stage, won the gold in the 10m air pistol event in the Golden Jubilee Independence Cup Shooting Championship at Dr Karni Singh Ranges in Tughlakabad on Monday. An inspector with the Mumbai Police, Harvinder was way below her best, but still managed the gold because of her 10 point lead. She turned in surprisingly low scores in the third, fifth, and seventh rounds. Saroja Kumari and Sheila Kanungo who bagged the silver and bronze respectively, were not as inconsistent in the latter stages, but the early lead built up by Harvinder carried her through.Leena Shirodkar, an employee with the Mumbai CISF won the gold in the 10m air rifle event logging 477.5 points. She is hoping to find a sponsor in Railways for she cannot afford a rifle which costs Rs 50,000.Her win was comparatively easy considering the leading contenders in the event - Kuheli Ganguly (WB), Zaini Thakkar (Guj), Anija Tere, Anjali Ved Pathak and Deepali Deshpande (all Mah) - did not turn up for the championships because they are preparing for the Commonwealth Games selection camp to be held in Bangalore next month.In contrast there was no dearth of competition in the men's rifle event. Delhi's Magesh Panwar, a silver medalist in the recently concluded National Games was a runaway winner in the men's 10m air rifle event with 673.9 points.ResultsAir Pistol 10m ISU: 1.
