Patiala, August 4: The throwers, led by women’s shot putter, Harbans Kaur, had a fine day at the third domestic athletics meet at the NIS, Patiala on Monday. Harbans Kaur became the first Indian to cross the 17-metre mark and in the process bettered her own previous national record by 69 centimetres.Railways’ Harbans heaved the shot to 17.06 metres on her third throw and once again touched exactly 17 metres on her fifth attempt.

Four of her five legal attempts were better than the previous national record.

Harpreet Kaur with a best of 15.85m was second and Surinderjeet was third with 15.26m. Bahadur Singh was the only to go over 18 metres in men’s shot put, with his best 18.03m coming on the fourth try. Mukesh Singh (16.84m) and Bhupinder Singh (16.23m) were second and third.

Anil Kumar made good use of the absence of Shakti Singh, who is away at Athens competing in the World Championships, by sending the disc to 58.00 metres, while Hardayanand achieved 55.18m and Surjit Singh 51.60m.

Neelam Singh was consistent with her attempts and managed to cross 50m-mark on all her six throws. Harjit Kaur (51.80m) and Sugan Yadav, touched 50.06m, emphasising the depth India has attained in this event.

PT Usha, who skipped the second domestic meet in Delhi took part here.India’s former sprint queen emerged triumphant in the 200m, clocking 24.79s.
