A women committed suicide in Bhandup on Wednesday allegedly because of the constant pressure and humiliation that she suffered at the hands of her in-laws. 23-year-old Munita Pal, who had been married for two and a half years, hung herself at her residence in Lakhan chawl . The Bhandup police on Saturday arrested Pal’s husband and his brother for abetting the suicide.Assistant police inspector Dattaram Girap of the Bhandup police station who is investigating the case said, “Ever since her marriage to Vinod Kumar Jagnarayan over two years back, Munita’s in-laws were pestering her to bring money from her father, an auto rickshaw driver, to help her husband buy a flat in Mumbai. They refused to let her visit her family till she fulfilled their demands.” Her in-laws refused to grant her permission to visit her family in Uttar Pradesh. Girap added, “For the last couple of years , theyhad been flatly denying her permission to visit home. They did not allow her to attend her cousin’s wedding as well as her brother’s funeral. However the final blow came with her grandfather’s death when she was forbidden from attending the last rites in their native village after which she took her life.”Munita’s father, Dharmaraj Mathura Pal was in his village at the time of the incident. He has filed a case against his son-in-law Vinod Kumar, Vinod’s brother Vijay Kumar and his wife and Vinod’s father Jagnarayan and his wife, under sections 306, 498 (A) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. While Vinod and Vijay Kumar are in police custody, the police are on the look out for the other three accused.Vinod Kumar is an LIC agent, while his father and brother own two paan shops in Bhandup. The family also owns two houses in Bhandup. Munita’s father lives with his brothers in a small room in Ghatkopar and sends money to his family in UP.
