The J-K Police CID has rejected the Army version of the February 22 incident at Dudipora in Handwara where four youths died, supposedly in a “crossfire”.

In its report to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on February 24, the CID said “there was no crossfire in the village” and the Army “deliberately” shot a man who had refused to be its informer. The Army spokesman denied any knowledge of the CID report.

The Army had attributed the deaths to “crossfire” during a Lashkar attack. But the CID says an Army Captain wanted one of the victims, Abdul Samad, to become an “informer”. The man declined and disappeared.

On being told Samad was back in the village, the Captain rushed there. On spotting the Army, Samad fled to a local ground where children were watching cricket. “The Army patrol followed him and shot him. As the children ran, three of them got shot,” official sources said.
