Former Chief Justice of India M.N. Venkatachaliah, noted lyricist and film maker Gulzar, cricket captain Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid were among the Padma awardees felicitated at a function at the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam set an example by coming down from the podium to award the medals to the elderly or those who couldn’t walk. The Bharat Ratna award has not been announced this year.

Among the awardees are:

Padma Vibhushan

Amrita Pritam: Renowned poet, novelist and short story writer

Prof Jayant Narlikar: Eminent astronomer and astrophysicist

Padma Bhushan

Soumitra Chatterjee: Actor

C. Hanumantha Rao: Economist

G. Padmanaban: Scientist

M.V. Kamath: Journalist

Poornima Arvind Pakvasa: Social worker. Brought in a wheelchair, 91-year-old Pakvasa, who took part in satyagraha at Limdi and Rajkot during the freedom struggle, received loud applause as the President got down from the dais to present the award to her. Pakvasa was sent to Sabarmati Jail where she trained women prisoners for self-defence. She also taught Kasturba Gandhi to read and write, an effort appreciated by Mahatma Gandhi who blessed her to continue literacy as a mission.
