Andrew Hall took three wickets and Charl Langeveldt two for South Africa before Scotland had a late surge to reach 186-8 in the World Cup Group A match on Tuesday. Both players came on when Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini in 11 overs could not dismiss either of Scotland openers Fraser Watts (24) and Majid Haq (13), who were then both out within four overs. But Dougie Brown blasted an unbeaten 45 and put on 50 with John Blain (23) in nine overs to inflate Scotland’s total after stand-in captain Ryan Watson (31) had earlier set a platform. Paul Hoffman (18) belted 14 runs off Langeveldt’s last over as the bowler’s figures blew out to 2-48. Hall had 3-50 with both bowlers’ figures being hurt by the late assault from Brown, Blain and Hoffman.South Africa captain Graeme Smith won the toss and opted to bowl first, with Ntini’s return for fast bowler Andre Nel the only change to the team that beat the Netherlands by 221 runs on Friday. Scotland were without captain Craig Wright, who has gone home for the funeral of a relative. Watson, who played cricket at school with Smith and South Africa’s wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, took over. Dewald Nel came in for Wright, while top-order batsman Navdeep.Watts and Haq were watchful early on to take Scotland to 16-0 by the eighth over, but Haq hit Pollock for two fours and cracked a six off Ntini as 15 was added in the next two overs. Hall replaced Ntini in the 12th over and struck on his second ball with Scotland on 35, having Haq caught behind.
