Cong eyeing Punjab poll: BJP

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Thursday alleged the Congress was trying to give a political colour to the Jaipur incident to create a wedge between Hindus and Sikhs ahead of the Assembly polls in Punjab. BJP parliamentary party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra condemned the incident, but said it did not behove the Congress to talk of Sikh honour. He reminded the ruling party that many Sikhs were shorn of their hair and lynched in 1984.

Malhotra said key accused Arjun Meena had been arrested and hunt for the others was on. He said SGPC leader Avtar Singh Makkar and BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu had met Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and “expressed their satisfaction” over the steps taken by the government. They conveyed this to the local Sikh community after which they lifted their dharna. He said the boy is a Central School student and hence the onus is now on the Congress to ensure that the school takes action. — ENS
