Climate change is not just about rising sea levels. The largest river in the country has also been affected and the people of India, Bangladesh and China have to deal with this change.

For Angshuman Hazarika, a Class XII student of Sanskriti The Gurukul here, any change in the Brahmaputra is of utmost importance since he lives by this river. He is part of a four-member Indian Climate Champion team that will make a two-week tour of China next week, raising the issue of India-China cooperation for dealing with effects of climate change on the river.

“Being an international river that originates in Tibet, Brahmaputra passes through India and flows out through Bangladesh. It has been severely affected by global climate change,” Angshuman, selected for this tour under a British Council initiative, told The Indian Express here on Wednesday.

The Indian Climate Champion team will tour China under a programme called ‘Green Journey’ along with counterparts from Japan and China from July 14 to 30 and look at various sites of environmental interest.

The International Climate Champions initiative is part of the British Council’s three-year Low Carbon Futures programme which provides an international platform for young people, local partners and leaders around the world to build an international consensus for action on climate change.
