A day after the compromise between workers—backed by CPI union AITUC—and management of Honda Scooters and Motorcycles India (HMSI) in Gurgaon, the party’s general secretary A B Bardhan today welcomed the deal, saying it was ‘‘not a political game’’. Bardhan, however, added that the settlement had nothing to do with the party’s views on MNCs and it continued to oppose FDI in retail.

‘‘The Gurgaon settlement is good and it’s not a political game as it has nothing to do with our views on MNCs. We, however, sternly oppose FDI in certain sectors, particularly in retail trade, as it affects our economy,’’ Bardhan told reporters.

Bardhan, who had criticised the Indo-Japanese venture at Gurgaon during the recent labour unrest, said, ‘‘We can welcome FDI if it generates jobs, opens new industries and enters the green field sector but we cannot compromise if it comes in financial and telecom sectors and retail business.’’

10 cr for Hindi heartland

HYDERABAD: Struggling to emerge from Big Brother CPI(M)’s shadow, the CPI plans to create a corpus of Rs 10 crore to strengthen its base in the Hindi heartland. Claiming that the party’s support base had not eroded since the Left split in 1964, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan said, ‘‘The funds will be collected through donations in all areas where the party has a base.’’ ENS
