Gupta new chairman of LIC

MUMBAI:

Y P Gupta, managing director, has taken over the current charge of the post of chairman, Life Insurance Corporation of India consequent on the retirement of G Krishnamurthy, chairman and G P Kohli, managing director on June 30, 2000.

MUMBAI: Income-Tax Department, Mumbai, recently organised a function to honour the tax payers who have been consistently paying an impressive amount of income tax over the years. A Balasubramanian, chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes, conferred the `Rashtriya Samman’ to the persons hailing from Mumbai at the function held at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium on June 26, 2000. B Mishra, chief commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, P K Sarma, Director General of Income Tax, Mumbai, K V M Pai, chief commissioner of Income Tax – II, Mumbai and R K Pathania, chief commissioner of Income Tax – III, Mumbai were present. These Samman Patra have been given for Assessment Year 198-99.

The Samman scheme was launched by Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha in the budget speech delivered on 1.6.1998 to recognise the important contribution of tax payers to the national cause. Samman is given according to the above scheme, to individual tax payers in the three categories, business, profession and salary.

CR flags off new train for Madurai

MUMBAI: Digvijay Singh, Minister of State for Railways, flagged off the newly introduced train No 1043 Dn for Madurai from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on 6.7.2000.

Kripashankar Singh, Minister of State for Home (Urban), was the chief guest on this occasion. Kirit Somaiya, MP, and M Arif Nasim Khan, Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, Maharashtra, were present on the occasion. The new weekly express train 1043 Dn will leave from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on Thursday at 23.30 hrs and will reach Madurai on Saturday at 12.10 hrs. In the return direction, 1044 Up will leave from Madurai at 18.00 hrs on Saturdays and will arrive Lokmanya Tilak Terminus at 7.20 hrs on Mondays.
