Gujarat readies for freedom fighter’s yatra

Preparations to welcome the Veeranjali Yatra of revolutionary freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma are on in full swing in Valsad and Surat. Chief Minister Narendra Modi will bring Varma’s mortal remains here during the three-day tour of South Gujarat starting from Monday.

The Veeranjali Yatra organised by the state government will be led by Modi who will carry the urns containing the ashes of Shyamji Krishna Varma and his wife Bhanumati. The yatra will enter Gujarat from Umargaon town on Monday. After touring 17 districts, it will be wound up at Shyamji Krishna Varma’s hometown in Mandvi taluka of Kutch district. Governor Kailashpati Mishra and Minister of State for Water Supply Narottam Patel will welcome the yatra by giving a guard of honour to the freedom fighter’s ashes.

The yatra will then proceed towards Valsad district where a cultural programme will be held to honour the freedom fighter. In Valsad, District Collector Vatsala Vasudeva said, ‘‘The programme will be held at the RPF Ground where hundreds of residents will converge to pay tributes to the great freedom fighter. The yatra will leave for Navsari district the same night.’’

On entering Surat district from Vaghech village at Bardoli taluka, the yatra will be welcomed by the rural police band which will pay tribute to Shyamji Varma’s mortal remains. Minister of State for Water Resources Narottam Patel, District Collector M.K. Das, senior BJP leaders and freedom fighters of Surat will also pay tributes to the mortal remains of Shyamji Varma and his wife Bhanumati. Then the yatra will enter Surat city from the Unn octroi post where members of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), including Mayor Snehlata Chauhan, Standing Committee Chairman Shanker Chevli and other councillors, will welcome the yatra.

The yatra will pass through Udhana Darwaja and reach Umiyadham at Varaccha area from the main thoroughfare at Chowk Bazaar. District Collector M.K. Das said, ‘‘We have organised various programmes where school children will sing patriotic songs and present a Lok Dairo.’’
