The Gujarat government today chargesheeted senior police officer R B Sreekumar in connection with his ‘‘semi-official’’ diary on the grounds of releasing official documents, sources said here. Sreekumar, currently Additional Director General (Police Reforms), would have a month’s period to reply, they added.

Sreekumar’s diary reportedly contains recordings of several instructions given to him by several higher-ups while he was the state Intelligence Bureau chief during the initial phase of the post-Godhra communal riots.

Sreekumar has claimed that one of those instructions was from Chief Minister Narendra Modi who told him to ‘‘go soft on rioters of the majority community and target Muslims’’. Modi also reportedly told him to ‘‘not pay attention to Hindutva groups that were active in the state’’.

When contacted, Sreekumar refused to accept or deny that he was served with a chargesheet.

Sreekumar is fighting a legal battle with the State Government before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) for not promoting him after he did not ‘‘toe the government line’’ while deposing before the Nanavati-Shah Commission.
