JUNAGADH, July 18: Four persons were killed on the spot and three others seriously injured when police opened fire on a rally of businessmen in Keshod town in Junagadh district of Gujarat this morning while Dalits went berserk in a Muslim area of Nashik after a garland of chappals was found on a statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar.. The Junagadh rally had been taken out by hundreds of local businessmen to protest against Dalits allegedly burning down shops and destroying business establishments on the eve of the Gujarat bandh.

Sources said the rally turned violent after reaching Char Chowk in the heart of the town, where the mob tried to set fire to an STD booth. Interestingly, the booth is said to be owned by Goganbhai Sondarva, brother of RJP minister Bachubhai Sondarva.

SRP and police personnel were assailed by heavy stone-throwing when they tried to stop the mob from burning the booth. Among those injured were DySP S Garechar, two police inspectors, three PSIs and 14 constables and jawans of the SRP.
