Former Foreign Secretary J.N. Dixit today joined the Congress, saying Gujarat was one of the factors which prompted him to jump into active politics.
Dixit, who served as High Commissioner in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, said that though he retired eight years ago, the Gujarat riots and the charge that intellectuals only made suggestions forced him to enter active politics.
Welcoming him into the party, K. Natwar Singh, chairman of AICC’s foreign affairs cell, said Dixit had been in touch with party president Sonia Gandhi for some months and had expressed the desire to join the party.
‘‘His presence in the party will help the foreign affairs department as well as the party,’’ he said, adding that he knew him personally from the time he joined the Indian Foreign Service.
