The Gujarat Police version of who was behind the Akshardham attack is threatening to come unstuck with the first official confirmation that it was Chand Khan, a J&K militant now in custody, who travelled with the two attackers to Gujarat.

The confirmation came after Khan’s joint interrogation by J&K police and a team of the Gujarat Police which arrived here today. Along with the Gujarat team were the men picked up in Ahmedabad and against whom POTA has already been slapped.

‘‘He (Chand Khan) gave the minutest details of his trip to Ahmedabad with the two fidayeens Shakeel and Abdullah,’’ Inspector General of Police Kashmir range K Rajendra told The Indian Express. ‘‘We have confirmed that he is the man who took the fidayeens to Ahmedabad.’’

It is learnt that Chand Khan recognised pictures of the two fidayeens and even knew details like what they were wearing at the time of the attack.

He is also said to have reiterated his earlier statement that they (Khan and the two attackers) had no local contact in Ahmedabad. ‘‘The interrogation is still going on. It is a lengthy process and there are several missing links still to be uncovered,’’ Rajendra said.

Sources said that even the accused whom the Gujarat Police have brought with them to Srinagar say that they don’t know Chand Khan.

Khan and those arrested from Gujarat have not yet met each other and police officers—from both Gujarat and J&K—are interrogating them separately.

The Gujarat Police had earlier claimed to have cracked the Akshardham case after arresting five persons from Dariapur and Shahpur areas of old Ahmedabad who include Saleem Hanief, Altaf, Adam Ajmeri (auto rickshaw driver), Mufti Abdul Qayoom and Maulvi Abdullah (the two ran a relief camp after the riots).
