GU, GMDC at odds over land acquisition

AHMEDABAD, July 25: Gujarat University and the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation are at odds on the issue of acquisition of a portion of varsity land by the latter. The whole issue of acquisition of land by GMDC came to the notice of GU only a couple of days ago. GU sources said GMDC had built a complex near the 132-foot Ring Road but the entry to the complex was through university land.

The sources said that GMDC first tried to acquire the land by putting forward a proposal at the university syndicate. But, when this failed, they approached the revenue department of the State Government. Subsequently, a notice was published in newspapers asking people to raise objections, if any, to the acquisition within 30 days .GU remained in the dark throughout this period and woke up to the fact only a couple of days ago when the GMDC set the acquisition process in motion.When contacted, GU V-C S B Vora said the future course of action would be decided only after taking legal advice.
