Two Government Railway Police personnel were suspended after they sought a Rs 20-bribe from the Bihar Railway Police deputy inspector general for a berth.

DIG Ajay Verma had boarded the Capital Express at Patna Junction railway station on Thursday night following an anonymous call about GRP men occupying berths in the train and giving it to passengers without reservation for a consideration.

‘‘The caller said this was common practice in the

Capital Express and asked me whether I could take any action. He also wanted to know whether a part of such ill-gotten money reached me as commission,’’ Verma said today.

‘‘I told him that I was an honest policeman and would accompany him in civilian clothes to trap the errant policemen. I also assured him that his identity will be kept secret,’’ he said.

When the DIG boarded the Patna-Katihar train in Mufti and sat on a berth, a havildar and a constable of the GRP escort occupying it demanded Rs 20 from him. As the train pulled to a halt at Patna Saheb railway station, Verma disclosed his identity and the corrupt policemen were told that they have been suspended with immediate effect.

The DIG also removed Ajit Kumar Singh, the GRP inspector of Danapur, for dereliction of duty.
