A BA final year student of Government College, Sector 1, Panchkula, lost his life while two others sustained serious injuries when two groups clashed at Majri Chowk near the college on Saturday. Khushal Sharma (20) alias Monu, son of Morni Block Samiti member Surinder Sharma, was a resident of Raipur Rani. The two injured are Arun Sharma and Munish, both in their 20s and residents of the same area.
“There had been an ego tussle going on between the two groups in the college for the past few months. Heated arguments took place between the groups — one of Khushal and the other comprising Mukesh, Rinku, Tinku, Munesh, Pawan and others, at the Panchkula bus stand in Sector 5 yesterday. Today, when Khushal, Arun and Munish were waiting for their bus to Raipur Rani, a group of around 25 youths came with rods, sharp-edged weapons and attacked them,” said a police officer who is investigating the case.
He said the three tried to run away but were chased by the other group and were beaten up. “With the help of the passers-by, the injured were rushed to the General Hospital in Sector 6. While Khushal succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, Arun and Munish were admitted with multiple injuries,” added the officer.
Arun said: “The group had started the fight in the college. To avoid any clash, we went to the bus stand to take a bus home. But the group reached there too and attacked us.”
The Panchkula police have registered a case of murder against Mukesh Rana, Rinku, Tinku, Munesh, Pawan and others. No arrest has been made yet. Khushal’s post-mortem will be conducted on Sunday.
Majri Chowk being a very busy area, a police control room vehicle is always stationed there. During the clash, however, it was not there. Traffic inspector Varinder Singh said the PCR vehicle was on duty elsewhere, but the moment information on the clash reached the police another PCR from Old Panchkula was rushed to the spot.
The SP office is hardly a few metres away from the site.
